In doing Success Coaching, also called Life Coaching with clients all over the world, I often hear the same complaints over and over again. “Great jobs are hard to find these days.”
My response is always the same: That’s not true. Great jobs are only hard to find if someone has an employee mentality.
To be truly successful in today’s very competitive job force, you must bring an employer or ownership mentality and work ethic to your job every day. What do I mean by that? Instead of always saying “it’s not my job” and taking the low road which is often the quick path to a pink slip take a “what can I do to solve this problem” approach. That is to say, think and act like the owner of the company would think and act.
I have worked with and currently work with many professional clients who have developed some good skill sets in their current occupation but who tend to take the safe route and miss true opportunity.
One of my clients who is just turning thirty, I’ll call him Mike, was hired on by a large accounting firm and has signed a two year contract to provide CPA services to companies in Australia. He lives in Sydney and is having a great time and finding his wings in a fantastic part of the world. He is growing socially, cutting his parental apron strings, and learning how to connect with other peers at work. He is learning a great deal about himself and it is a priceless education. The firm he works with is growing rapidly and he has worked hard but is getting tired of the work. He has been encouraged to stick around and consider becoming a partner. I asked him what a full partner earned and he thought it was somewhere around one million dollars per annum. I said, “Mike, do you know how many thirty year olds have an opportunity to be earning one million dollars a year working for their company?” He said, “Well, I guess not many.” I said “Probably less than 5% of all CEO’s earn that much money. You need to expand your sense of possibility and open up to what’s possible. Why couldn’t you work into a partnership position, grow the business for five years then sell your position and retire or do something else?”
He’s now very excited about his opportunity which was there all along. He’s been working hard, doing his best, giving the extra mile and getting noticed. The owners like him. I can almost guarantee that he’ll get full partnership within four years. Owners are simply people looking for other bright people to help them grow their business. Too many people take the path of the victim and refuse to give more than they are paid for. Those people will always struggle. Don’t be in that group.
I have many more stories I can and will be sharing with you that are real world and real results driven.
For now, wherever you are, do your absolute best. Become a solution specialist and be the one who is willing to implement the solution not just give the idea. Talk is cheap. Do just this one thing and then watch the doors of opportunity open up to you either within your company or with someone else that is trying to recruit you to their team.
Until next time— Carpe Diem!
